Blike Bike Care

blog hero image

Enter some text...Our e-bikes are great. With a little TLC and a regular check over from you, they will keep running smoothly and efficiently until your next regular service. And there will most likely be less parts to replace, saving you money too!

Frequency depends on how often you ride your bike and weather conditions. Wet and wintry weather ideally requires a weekly check and clean up, while in dry summer conditions, it can be left a little longer.

Clean machine

A clean bike is a happy bike. It not only feels better to ride but looks good, so spend half an hour on the following and your Blike will thank you for it.

  • Use a bucket of warm soapy water to remove all accumulated dirt. Rinse off with cold water.
  • Wipe dirt off the chain with a microfibre cloth, or use a specialist chain cleaning agent / grease remover such as Juice Lubes or Muc Off.
  • Wind the pedals backwards, adding one drop of Squirt lubricant to each roller - be careful not to get lube on the outside of the chain as this will attract dirt.
  • Wipe the chain again with a cloth to remove excess lube, or grit and dirt from the road will stick to it and make for an inefficient (and noisy!) drivetrain.
  • Belt drive, not chain? Visually inspect the belt for signs of damage or wear.

Brakes

  • Check for signs of brake pad wear or damage: increased lever movement, less power in the brakes, noisy/squeaking brakes.
  • Visually inspect the brake pads in the caliper to see how much material is left. If you can’t see any, they need to be replaced immediately.
  • If you hear metal-on-metal sounds coming from your brakes, DO NOT RIDE. The pads have worn right down. Replace immediately.

Tyres/Wheels

  • Look to see how much tread the tyre has, and if there are any cracks appearing in the sidewalls.
  • If you have a puncture, check the tyre for foreign objects and the rim for damage.
  • Keep your tyres pumped up to the recommended pressure (printed on the tyre sidewall). Too little and you run the risk of impact punctures from poor road surfaces. Too much and your ride comfort will be affected and tyres will not grip so well in wet conditions.
  • Not sure about the tyre pressure? Your local bike shop should be happy to let you use their track pump, then you will get a feel for the required pressure.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Your ebike is set to the maximum permitted assistance under UK law – 15.5mph (25kph). Altering its power output to increase speed is illegal, potentially dangerous and will invalidate any warranty and insurance policies with both Blike and the bike’s manufacturer.
